Lessons dentists can take away from the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ phenomenon

In case you haven’t seen the ‘ice bucket challenge’ by now, here it is. They’re short videos that promote awareness for ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) by dumping, you guessed it, a bucket of ice over your head and donating money. You are nominated by a “friend” on Facebook and when you complete the challenge yourself, you get to nominate a couple of your “friends”. Many of the participants donate various amounts of money.

Whether you think this is great or it’s just a bunch of people clamoring for attention, you can’t deny the actual results for the ALS Association. Last year, the ALS Association raised just over $2 million dollars in the month of August. In August 2014, they raised over $100 million dollars.
